homemade hot chocolate

On the 10th day of blogmas!
This week I tried out a recipe for hot chocolate that I found on Pinterest. It claims to be the world's best hot chocolate. I already had all of the ingredients and it was super simple to make on the stove. This batch made about 4 servings. It was good! A richer, cozier taste than the stuff in packets.

• INGREDIENTS •
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup water
4 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla

• DIRECTIONS •
1. In a saucepan, mix the dry ingredients.
2. Add the water and bring to a boil. Keep boiling for one minute.
3. Add the milk. Heat to you preference.
4. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Stir and serve.

what to binge watch over break

On the 9th day of blogmas!
Winter break is right around the corner! If you're lucky enough to have some time off, take advantage of lazy, snowed-in days and binge watch a new show. Personally, I will be in my pj's all day catching up on Riverdale and Grey's anatomy. Some shows to consider:

1. The Goldbergs
Murry, Beverly and teenage Barry and Erica. Then there's 11-year-old Adam, who's capturing their every moment on video. This quirky series, built from Adam's tapes, recreates family life in the pre-YouTube 1980's.

2. Gilmore Girls
Thirty-two year old single mom, Lorelai, lives with her teenage daughter Rory in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, with crazy neighbors and many ups and downs.

3. This is Us
Everyone has a family. And every family has a story. 'This Is Us' chronicles the Pearson family across the decades: from Jack and Rebecca as young parents in the 1980s to their 37-year-old kids Kevin, Kate, and Randall searching for love and fulfillment in the present day.

4. Parks and Rec
An ensemble comedy that follows Leslie Knope, a mid-level bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana, and her tireless efforts to make her quintessentially American town just a little bit more fun.

5. Riverdale
While navigating the troubled waters of sex, romance, school and family, teen Archie and his gang become entangled in a dark Riverdale mystery. Based on the characters of Archie Comics.

6.The Good Place
A smart, unique comedy about what makes a good person. The Good Place follows Eleanor, an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife and, thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place, which is definitely where she belongs.

7. Jane the Virgin
After vowing to remain chaste until marriage, Jane learns she is pregnant due to a medical slip-up. As her meticulously planned life gets more like the telenovelas she loves, she faces a lot of complicated decisions about her future.

save your skin

On the 8th day of blogmas!
Don't let the winter air get the best of your skin. Some simple ideas to keep your skin soft and fresh all season long. Gotta be ready for those spring vacations :)

Take your showers warm, not hot. A hot shower might be nice but can really dry out your skin. Hot water can damage your skin's moisture barrier (especially your face). Don't forget to exfoliate once in a while to slosh off any dead skin and prep for lotion. It will absorb better!

Lotion up after a shower. Keep lotion on your bathroom counter so you can immediately slather it on after a shower. Since the shower can dry out skin, it is important to replenish the skin's moisture as soon as you step out.

Get a humidifier. Take advantage of a long night's sleep and use that time to restore your skin. Run a humidifier in the bedroom while you sleep to keep the air skin-friendly.

Keep hand lotion in the car. A little tube of hand lotion is a car essential during the winter. I feel like that's always when I realize I need lotion. When I'm leaving to go somewhere!

Overnight face treatments. Slather on some hydrating and restoring moisturizers before bed so they can soak in and treat your face all night long. Some products to consider: Drink Up Overnight MaskNight-A-Mins Renewal CreamRosehip OilUltra Repair Cream Intense HydrationMidnight Recovery Concentrate

Don't forget about lips! Keep up with a lip scrub (like this DIY) and good lip balm. For extremely dry lips always apply a heavy duty lip balm before bed. I've heard this is amazing and a holy grail for lots of people.

Drink water. An obvious one. Most people are not drinking the amount of water they should be drinking on a daily basis. It's important to hydrate from the inside out!

gift wrapping ideas

On the 7th day of blogmas!
This year I wanted to step up my gift wrapping game so I started looking for ideas on pinterest. I didn't have too many gifts to wrap this year so I was focused on finding some unique wrapping paper and adding a simple detail. I found this cute white and gold wrapping paper at Target. For the ties, I used a simple twine string. I added some branches that broke off from some extra garland. I added some gift tags that I found at Target's "after Christmas sale" last year. They are so pretty and simple! Unfortunately I forgot to put them on the gifts before I took the picture.

These are some cute ideas I found on pinterest during my research. I also discovered that minted has some really cute wrapping paper and accessories!

on my radar: christmas edition

On the 5th day of blogmas!
No surprise, the month is flying by quickly. I wish I had the whole month of December off from work. It's hard to enjoy the season and really get in the spirit when the work week is slowly killing me. Really gotta take advantage of every minute of the weekends! I've got my eye on a few things to share for this special edition of 'on my radar'.

Lifetime/Hallmark movies • I have been recording these movies like crazy. They are so cheesy but kind of homey and comforting at the same time. I have a few set up for next weekend. I can't wait to start watching all the movies I have stocked up on the DVR. They are perfect for weeknights!

Homemade cinnamon rolls • After many blah attempts at making homemade cinnamon rolls, I think I finally found some success with a recipe. I did a test run this weekend, and I'm actually really happy with how they taste! I'll be making these for Christmas morning.

Cookies + Brunch get-together • Next weekend I'll be getting together with my cousins for a little brunch + cookie baking. Sounds like it's going to be super cute and festive. Can't wait for some good food and good company :)

Christmas break reunions • Truly the most wonderful time of the year because all of my friends will be back in town for Christmas. I only see some of them a few times a year so it's a big deal when we can all get together and catch up.

Real Christmas movies • I take Christmas movie traditions very seriously. The really good, classic, Christmas spirit type of movies that I have to watch every year. They make the season real. I like to line those up starting in the second half of December to perfectly lead up to Christmas Eve. Can't wait to start next weekend!

2018 resolutions/goals • Time to start thinking about what changes I'll be making next year! I'm pretty good at new years resolutions and have been able to gradually make a lot of healthy lifestyle changes over the last few years. Excited to see how far I can take it!

A Christmas Story: Live • I haven't seen much promotion for this event but happened to scroll across in on my instagram ads a few days ago. I love watching the live shows put on by networks. I watch this movie every year and can't wait to see this show! Sunday December 17 at 7pm on fox!

winter lip scrub

On the 4th day of blogmas!

With all the red/berry holiday lip colors, you need a good lip scrub! Lipstick sits best on smooth, hydrated lips. So keep this lip scrub on the shelf all season long! For general maintenance 1-2 times a week is enough. Follow up with your favorite lip balm (I like aquaphor!). Use day-of if you're planning on wearing a lip color later.

•INGREDIENTS •
1/2 tsp agave
1 tsp olive oil
2-3 tsp brown sugar
2-3 drops vanilla extract

•DIRECTIONS•
In a small bowl, mix agave and olive oil. Add 2 tsp brown sugar until well combined, then add vanilla. If necessary, gradually add more brown sugar until desired consistency. Place in a small air tight jar. Enjoy smooth lips all winter long!

gift guide for her

on the first day of blogmas!

Happy blogmas! In addition to this list of gift ideas (either for someone else or ideas for yourself), I wanted to share my favorite tip when it comes to giving gifts to others. The hardest part about gift giving is that when you really need a good idea for someone your mind goes blank. To ease the stress, I like to keep a running note in my phone all year long. That way whenever I think of something or they mention something, I immediately add it to the list under their name. When birthdays and Christmas roll around, I've got a handful of ideas. Don't forget to check out previous gift guides for more ideas! (2016, 2015, 2014)

3. Aerie Plush Jogger - $20 (on sale!)
7. Aerie Downtown Sweatshirt - $30 (on sale!)
(a single stick in 'amethyst' is another great option!)
(these jack rogers boots are another great option!)
20. Earring Organizer - $19

Stay tuned for the rest of the 12 Days of Blogmas!

a little update

Hi! It's been a bit!

I'm kicking off October (birthday month!) with a little update post.

1. I had a busy summer filled with several weekend trips around the state.

2. I finally used my HBO free trial and was able to watch Big Little Lies and finish Girls. Loved both of them. Definitely recommend BLL even if you read the book. I really enjoyed both.

3. I finally jumped on the Spotify train and even got 3 months of premium. I'm hooked but can't keep up the premium version. Free will have to do!

4. I really liked my summer playlist this year. It was more country than I usually listen to but still a good variety. A lot of good music came out!

5. I started to get in to watercolor painting. I'm just a beginner and my materials are cheap, but I love the way it looks. Hopefully I can make something cool soon.

6. I got my first baby succulents! I've had them for about a month and a half. I'm trying to keep them alive, but I don't know what I'm doing. Started with 6 and I'm down to 4 now. Wish me luck.

7. I'm turning 25 at the end of the month! I never do anything big for my birthday so I decided back in January that this was the year to really celebrate. I've got a list of little things I want to do (binge a show, go out for dessert, manicure, etc) and I'll spread them out over the month. Can't wait!

8. Last but not least, the blog got a makeover! It's fun to change it up, and I'm always trying to improve the blog. Hope you like the new look! Don't forget to follow the blog on Bloglovin' so you can keep up with my posts along with all your other favorite blogs. The link is in the sidebar on the right :)

my favorite things to do on mackinac island

Last summer I posted this Mackinac Island Travel Guide (UPDATED!) with all the information you need to plan a trip to the island! I recently updated it with even more content. Every time I go, I learn about more places and things to do. Since I go so often, I thought I would share what my typical long weekend on the island looks like and what I like to do there.

Pink Pony is my favorite dinner spot. Depending on the weather, sitting outside or on their upper deck is really nice. I always get the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. Sometimes I will get a rum runner drink for fun.

Poppins! I always go in to Poppins 2 or 3 times when I'm visiting the island. It's my favorite store to browse and spend time in.

•Walk along Main St and Market St. Even though I never buy anything, I always walk up and down the streets in town. Just to see what's new and different things in town.

•Ice cream at Moomers! I always get the toffee coffee ice cream! I like to take my ice cream over to the Harbor or Marquette Park.

•Explore the Lake Shore Dr. boardwalk or Pontiac Trail Head (just off of W Bluff Rd). Take a walk and enjoy the views!

•Ice cream at Sadie's at The Grand Hotel is a new favorite spot. It's super cute, and I like to get a mix of toasted coconut and coffee lover ice cream. Sadie's is open to the public and doesn't require hotel admission fee!

•I always spend some time on the Mission Point front lawn. I pack some snacks, a drink, headphones, and pull up a white chair. I love to people watch, soak up the sun, watch the water, listen to a podcast, or just chat.

Walk along the water. There is a path right along the water that goes from The Greens of Mackinac Restaurant to just before Arch Rock. (Google Maps calls it the Dennis O. Cawthorne Shoreline Trail). Alternatively, there is a boardwalk along the water near the school that has a great view of the bridge and some pretty homes.

•Sneak onto the Grand Hotel property. There are a few different ways of doing this, but I love sitting in the pretty front yard area or exploring all the rooms inside and different floors.

•It's fun to bike to/explore a new spot each time I visit. There are trails all over the place. Last time we were on the trails in the woods somewhere between Mission Point and Arch Rock. We ended up following some dirt paths through the trees and found a cute hidden lookout spot.

What I have been loving this month!

Tired Eyes - EP by Katelyn Tarver. i've been following katelyn since she was on american juniors (american idol spin-off). so exciting to hear her new music. i love her new EP and have been playing it on spotify a ton. she's on soundcloud too!

Hacksaw Ridge
. i had no idea what this movie was about but just heard about it from the oscar buzz. it was really good!

The Flash. i finally caught up on the episodes that started after Christmas. binge watching an action show makes it that much more intense. definitely recommend this show if you're looking for a new one!

Downy Unstoppable In-Wash Scent Booster in "fresh"
. i know this is a super random laundry favorite, but this scent is amazing. i'm trying to figure out how to diy a car air freshener with this scent.

Grey's Anatomy. i'm in deep with this show again. the drama sucks me in every time. i'm trying to slow down a bit since i'm almost caught up with what is available on netflix.

About Time
. i love this movie and was so happy to catch it on tv one night. it had been a few years since i last saw it. i ordered the dvd on amazon the next day.

The Great British Baking Show. i kept hearing about the obsession with this show and then one of my friends started watching. she loved it and passed on the recommendation. i like it a lot better than the american baking shows. it's refreshingly simple and less gimick-y. there are 4 seasons on netflix!

Snake Chain Choker Necklace from Urban Outfitters. So simple and delicate and pretty! The size is adjustable so it can be worn like a choker but i like to wear it looser like a short necklace.

Divide by Ed Sheeran. huge shout-out to my friend that bought the cd and passed the music along to me. i've been listening to the album nonstop. some really great lyrics on this one!

Sully. this movie was so interesting! i remember when the event happened but the movie did a great job telling more of the story that the public might not have known.

all about leggings

I tried on my first pair of leggings in December 2013 during my junior year of college (yes, I know how late I was to the legging obsession). My whole world changed. These were $9 black fleece-lined leggings at Windsor. I wore them to death over my month long winter break. It wasn't long before I had a whole pile of them. I never wore just leggings out in public, but all winter I wore them layered underneath my jeans because that was the most brutal winter I can remember. Two layers of pants were necessary everyday. If I was at home, I was wearing leggings.

Now that I'm out of school, my uniform has become black leggings and a long shirt or oversized sweater. Of course, only when it's appropriate! So today, I thought I would talk about my favorite leggings.

From October to May, I pretty much exclusively wear fleece-lined leggings. My favorite is this Zenana Outfitters pair that I got from Dry Goods a few years ago. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find them at the store or online since then. I wanted to purchase another pair so I'm hoping they come back next season. They are a thicker knit fleece-lined one-size legging. When I'm not wearing those, I like the black or grey fleece-lined leggings from Francesca's.

During the summer, I like a thinner legging or an athletic legging. My go-to are these from Express. I have a few pairs. My only dislike is that they are so long on me! But they just started carrying a short length so I might have to try those. For an athletic legging, I really like the ones by Gaiam. They have simple black, cropped, mesh cut-out, and a variety of patterned leggings. This brand fits so well!

coconut chocolate chip cookies

This is a cookie recipe I got from Ingrid and have been making for a couple years now. I first started watching Ingrid in 2010 and she has always been one of my favorite youtubers. She shared the recipe in this video and I tried it out right away. Personally, I think they are delicious, but I know they are not for everyone. They are softer and can have a little bit of a different texture because of the coconut. I like them because it's just a small batch! I usually get 10-12 cookies out of it.

Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 cups almond flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
6 tbsp coconut oil (melted)
1/4 cup honey
1/2 tsp almond extract
2 tbsp water
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup chocolate chips

1. Combine almond flour, salt, and baking soda.
2. In a separate bowl, combine coconut oil, honey, almond extract, and water. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients bowl and stir.
3. Mix in coconut and chocolate chips.
4. Scoop cookies on to baking sheet and flatten slightly.  Makes 10-12 cookies.
5. Bake at 350ºF for 12-15 minutes or until edges are golden brown.

on my radar

In this new series I'll be sharing things I'm looking forward to, trends I'm watching, products I want to try, etc. This was inspired by Carly from The College Prepster. I can't wait to share what's on my radar each season!

1) Beauty and the Beast. I was never super into the Disney princesses when I was younger but Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite story. I'm really excited to see how it does as a live-action movie but also nervous because sometimes a sequel, remake, or movie adaptation can ruin the story. Hopefully all the hype doesn't make it a huge disappointment!

2) Girls. During the summer I was able to watch the first five seasons of the show over just a few months. I was obsessed. The final season has just started and I can't wait to watch it. I'm waiting until it's almost over so I can binge watch over a couple weeks while I use my HBOgo free trial haha. I'll be carefully avoiding spoilers.

3) One Piece Swimsuit. I have been seeing these suits all over social media and ads for a year and I'm dying to jump on this trend. The prints and styles are getting cuter and cuter. The last few summers I've been living in a simple black bikini, and I'm ready for a little change. Hopefully I can find one that I like in the next few months.

4) Big Little Lies. I read this book in the fall and really enjoyed it. I'm really looking forward to seeing it on TV. Just like Girls, I'll be waiting until it's almost over so I can binge watch it on my HBOgo free trial.

5) LOVODA. Statement necklaces were great, but they looked great on other people and looked overwhelming on me. I'm definitely more of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry and accessories. I'm so happy to see that simple, dainty jewelry is taking over. I love it! And I love that it's just about everywhere now. I've found a few great etsy jewelry shops and found Lovoda on pinterest. I love their stuff and can't wait to order some soon!

the best tv shows when you need a good cry

Sometime I just feel like watching something super emotional. I want to watch something that is heavy and will help get out all my sad. I love a good TV drama that can take me on an emotional rollercoaster for 42 minutes and make me cry at the happiest and saddest things. Today I'm sharing my top five TV shows that really know how to tug at my heart strings.

Parenthood. Four grown siblings juggle parenthood, relationships, careers and more as they cope with life's ups and downs in this drama set in Berkeley, California.

One Tree Hill. Half-brothers Lucas and Nathan alternate between kinship and rivalry on the basketball court and in the hearts of their friends.

Grey's Anatomy. Intern (and eventual resident) Meredith Grey finds herself caught up in personal and professional passions with fellow doctors at a Seattle hospital.

Friday Night Lights. New head coach Eric Taylor finds his every move scrutinized as he takes over leadership of Texas's no. 1 high school football team.

Nashville. Country music superstars Rayna Jaymes and Juliette Barns face personal and professional challenges as they navigate their paths as artists and individuals in the music city.

20 hours in chicago

I made a quick trip to Chicago over the weekend to watch my brother's college a cappella group compete in the ICCA Semifinals. ICCA is the international championship of college a cappella. If you've ever seen Pitch Perfect, this is the real life version of their competition. The groups are amazing and so fun to watch.

We were only there for 20 hours but I made sure to squeeze in some tourist stuff before the event. The event and our hotel were directly across from Grant Park, and we were able to see Shedd Aquarium from our window. We walked all the way up the park areas until we got to the famous "Bean" at the north end. From there we decided to go see the river since we were so close. By this time, I was started to get so cold and the strong wind wasn't helping. After the 30 minute walk back to our hotel, I was frozen. We grabbed a quick dinner at the restaurant attached to the hotel and then made our way to The Auditorium Theater of Roosevelt University to watch the ICCA Semifinals. We watched 10 groups perform their sets, and they were all amazing. Of course, we thought my brother's group was the best. So proud!

The next morning, our group took an early trip back to the "Bean" to get some pictures without the normal crowd. We were there around 8:30 a.m. and it was perfect. More groups started showing up when we left so I'm glad we went that early. My favorite breakfast place is Yolk, and what do you know, there was one directly next door to the hotel. I was so excited (The picture of Yolk below was taken from my hotel room window). So of course we walked straight to Yolk and had breakfast.

Some quick notes about my beloved Yolk: 1) The plates are huge. Make sure you are super hungry when you arrive. You will be full for 8 hours. You could probably split with a friend or take half home for later. 2) I usually get the build your own scrambler. This comes with tons of fruit and two giant pancakes. These are the best pancakes I've ever had. And they taste just as amazing when taken home and warmed up later.

february favorites

Some favorites from December, January, and February.

The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines. I'm a big fan of all things home renovation and therefore, Fixer Upper on HGTV. I read their book in one sitting! Loved learning about how they got started with both business and their family.

Boscia Luminizing Black Mask. I have a face mask addiction, but surprisingly this is my first peel-off mask. I got a free travel size in a recent Sephora promotion and it's great. I think I might buy the full size when this runs out!

Make Me (Cry) [Acoustic] by Noah Cyrus feat. Labrinth. I love the acoustic version of this song and could listen to it over and over again.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I started reading this in fall 2016 but then took a break when the holidays took over. Finally finished reading it and now I can't wait for the HBO show! I really enjoyed the book so I'm interested to see how it plays out on TV. Just need to sign up for that HBO free trial!

Lady Lovin' podcast. My latest podcast obsession. I just discovered it and started all the way back with their first podcast. It's some entertaining girl talk.

Glamglow Supermud mask. This was a Christmas present to myself that I got an amazing deal on. I love it.

Issues by Julia Michaels. I heard this song on Selena Gomez's instagram and bought it soon after. On repeat!

homemade granola

In college, I spent a lot of weekends at my cousin's house since they lived so close to campus. Sometimes my aunt would have homemade granola that we ate for breakfast. I had never had granola before, and it was delicious. Years later when I started getting into smoothie bowls, I called her up to ask for the recipe. She gave me the recipe but with no measurements. She said she just eyeballs it and so I do too! I usually make this every other week to have with my breakfast smoothie bowls.

Olive oil
Honey
Vanilla extract
Oats

1. On the stove, combine olive oil, honey, and vanilla extract on high heat until it bubbles.
2. Reduce heat to low and add oats. Stir until oats are well coated.
3. Heat on low for 10 minutes. Stir and repeat until oats have cooked for about 30-40 minutes.
4. Let cool. Store in an airtight container.

Just make sure not to over do it with the honey or the granola might be too sticky. I've definitely done it before.
